The Rajput Kingdom of Bundi in Rajasthan, Northwestern India, has been given credit for the beginnings of the work, which dates from 1750. A scarlet-colored poppy, famous for producing opium, is the central bloom. Since the time of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (1605–27), studies of flower vases in the European style have become a prominent topic in Indian miniature painting. The artists would recreate Dutch prints in the Mughal style, such as those by Dutch artist Jan van Huysum (Dutch, 1682–1749). The entire bouquet appears to grow out of the ground in this Rajasthani court painting from a single stem. The Cleveland Museum of Art is the object's current custodian in Ohio, USA. The artist's identity is, regrettably, unknown.
