Our Story

The Maazi Merchant offers a retail experience through shoppable stories themed around Hindustani historical heritage. Our vision is to introduce the imagery of the lost Golden Age of India to the world through South Asian art and craft forms. While we cannot convince museums across the world to return items tracing their provenance to the subcontinent, we will surely do our best to help you contextualize and decolonize our beautiful shared history.

Art is something that connects our present to the past and the past to the present. Unfortunately, as South Asians, we have had very limited access to any historiographic materials. We can blame it on a turbulent ruling elite and colonization, which led to centuries of instability, disorder, and confusion among our people. When we woke up in the modern world, miraculously, we had little or no iconography, art, texts, or objects left to help us put the story of Hindustan into context.

As the Curator-in-Chief, I feel that in the times we live in, it is imperative that we learn more about our history and its many nuances, which never find enough space in today's dialogue. It is my sincere hope that The Maazi Merchant can pique your interest and make you curious enough to deep-dive into the world of Hindustani history. We begin our journey with elaborate curations spanning several centuries and regions of the subcontinent.
