Humayun

Of all the Mughal Emperors, it was Badshah Humayun who was most ineptly named. Humayun or the fortunate one, was perhaps the most unfortunate. When he came to the throne, several of his brother’s revolted and the one who supported him was assassinated. In the absence of a united front, Sher Shah Suri, the Afghan general (governor of Bihar) who joined Babur at the first battle of Panipat, revolted and forced Humayun to flee all the way to Persia. It was only fifteen years later that Humayun, with the support of the Shah of Persia, was able to retake the throne of Hindustan. Unfortunately for him, soon after, he slipped off a staircase with a pile of books in his arms and died leaving a young Akbar to fend for himself. His life, like Babur was troubled and unsettled. A stark opposite of the image of opulence we see in his descendants. The present work’s provenance is currently being studied. The artist too is unknown. Will update as and when new information emerges.
