Popularly known as "Flowering Marigold," this picture is said to be in the style of Hunhar II, a prominent figure in the Mughal courts who worked in Murshidabad or Lucknow in the middle of the eighteenth century. The current work draws inspiration from marigolds, which were popular in India as a result of commerce with the Portuguese in the 1500s and 1600s. The Portuguese introduced many new plants to India, including potatoes, tomatoes, and marigolds, which became staples of the Indian way of life. Yeah, even I was surprised. After passing through private hands and not so shockingly, ending up in English hands in the second part of the 1800s, it was acquired by Sothebys in the 1960s.
