This piece of art is from the Dara Shikoh album, a collection of paintings and calligraphy that Dara Shikhoh put together in the 1630s. Dara, the elder brother of Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan's chosen successor, was a wise example of how unorthodox Hindu faiths can coexist peacefully. He was an unconventional, liberal-minded Muslim who contended for the fusion of Hinduism's Vedanta philosophy and Islamic Sufism. In Aurangzeb's orthodox eyes, this rendered him a heretic. The artwork is from an album that Dara Shikoh got commissioned for his wife Nadira Banu as a gift. However, following her passing, this album was put into the Mughal royal library, where all inscriptions tying it to Dara were purposefully removed—fortunately, not entirely (they were painted over with gold which was centuries lated removed by its English Custodians). One of the few Mughal albums to have nearly entirely survived, the Dara Shikoh album is well known for its floral studies. When the court of Emperor Shah Jahan was in Burhanpur, Dara Shikoh employed the mystery artist Muhammad Khan, who may have been from the Deccan; this painting is the sole signed and dated piece in the collection (1630-32). The young guy serving wine from a Mughal jewel studded gold flask into a cup with a similar ornamentation is sporting the extravagant turban that is popular in Iranian courts in Isfahan. Contrary to modern Mughal depictions of flower vases in paintings, which are often slim in shape with a single type of flower arranged in two dimensions, one must pay close attention to the bouquet of flowers in the vase. According to certain British historians, Muhammad Khan's painting of a bouquet resembles European florilegia paintings from the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
