This portrait of Jehangir drinking from a wine cup shows was made using opaque water colours and gold on paper. It is presently with the Smithsonian Museum for the last century. Unfortunately, the artist remains unknown. My gut says it could be Abu’l Hasan but I am not too sure. So let us go with artist unknown for now. A bit about the subject - Jahangir was an exacting patron who worked closely with the artists in his employ. The style of portraiture created during his reign changed dramatically with the influx of European prints into India. He had many of these prints copied, so closely that the visitors who had brought them could not distinguish the originals, and this zest for accuracy is reflected in the painting here. There were elements of theatrics, a lot of allegory and colour in works patronised by him. The present work is a straightforward likeness, something very different from his usual styles. No halo, no putti heralding the emperor from the heavens and no representation of his vast domains in the background. Rather, Jahangir is presented in a very simple manner drinking wine.
